The case for AI Companions for Bharat
I used to think I understood the AI companion market.
Build something smart. Make it engaging. Users will love it.
Then I started actually talking to users. Not the obvious ones tweeting about AI girlfriends. The invisible ones: Kirana owners. Watchmen. Auto drivers. Tailors.
Here's what shattered my assumptions:
The noisiest customers cost the most. Romance-seekers are easy to acquire (they know exactly what they want) but impossible to retain (they leave the moment you set boundaries). Funnily enough, Indians don’t want a female bestie (high-churn product).
The quietest customers are worth the most. Blue-collar workers don't even realize they need AI companionship. But once they experience genuine connection (“talk to someone” positioning) in their language, understanding their world/culture? They discuss work, life, hobbies and have real conversations with lasting engagement.
Indians practice friendship portfolio management. Not 50 shallow connections, 3-4 deep ones. Each serving a different emotional need. AI companions are just extending this ancient social architecture digitally.
Content is emotional infrastructure. Users don't just want entertainment all day. What they are looking for is actual conversations. The song/short-video/game might not be an use case by itself but just an excuse to talk about their stressful day.
Cultural intelligence = permanent moat. Technical features are temporary advantages. Understanding why “family pressure” is love, not stress? That's unfakeable competitive advantage worth 2x engagement.
Real friendship is reciprocal. Users want AI Companions with their own evolving stories, daily experiences, and personal struggles. They expect stories when they ask “What did you do today?”. They want their companions to have opinions on certain topics (weather, sports, pop culture trends) and even enjoy light debates around certain topics.
This reciprocity requirement explains why companies aren't just building AI Companions, they're building emotional infrastructure for India's loneliest generation. The ones surrounded by crowds starving for understanding.
The most important metrics to track here are relationship depth over breadth. How long someone talks about their day. Whether they return when life gets difficult. If the AI understands their world without explanation.
The companies that win won't just have better AI. They'll have better understanding of what it means to be human in Modern India.
I thought I understood the AI companion market by thinking about technology. Turns out, understanding Modern India was the real challenge, and the real opportunity.
And that might be the most defensible moat of all.

I keep noticing this on the roads too, but a different situation ,someone struggling to get a ride(overcrowded bus/metro, overpriced cabs), looking around for help, and just a few feet away there’s someone riding alone with an empty seat. Those little moments break the awkwardness and make people more open to asking or offering a lift next time. Over time, this can snowball(because once you feel the gratitude and heartful convos you ain't going back) more people helping each other out, more conversations on the road, and a society that feels calmer, friendlier, and just a bit more relaxed.
